Statement on Haida Intellectual Property

Haida art is a representation of who we are as a people – it reflects our stories, lineages, and history. Haida art was and is utilized to mark important milestones and achievements including marriage, birth, death, ‘WaahlG̱ahl (potlatch), ceremonies, etc.

Haida art is a direct connection to our Kuuniisii (ancestors).

The Haida Nation has fought tirelessly to protect our art, language, cultural properties, and knowledges from the devastation caused by colonialism, genocide, and racism. We continue to protect these treasures – as they are ours and ours alone.

In return, we ask that you utilize Yahguudang (respect) and ‘Laa guu ga ḵanhlln (responsibility) in your engagement with our art.

Yahguudang in the context of protecting Haida intellectual and cultural property means that – unless you are of Haida ancestry – you may not utilize our design principles for personal gain in any way. This includes, for profit, for trade, for merit, or to describe yourself as a Haida artist.

By demonstrating Yahguudang and ‘Laa guu ga ḵanhlln you hold yourself to a high standard.

Haawa (thank-you) for respecting our intellectual and cultural property rights by supporting Haida art and Haida artists.
